Long weekends in Luxembourg

April 23, 2025

This year, spring and summer will feature a number of long weekends. On these occasions, many events will take place in the capital and across the country. These include some not-to-be-missed festivities, such as the national holiday, as well as lesser-known but equally authentic festivities.

As we announced in a previous article, 2025 is generous with well-placed public holidays! Many of these fall on Fridays or Mondays, making for some long, festive weekends.

May 8, 9 and 10: Europe Day and start of the Octave

Europe Day in Luxembourg

Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9 throughout the European Union. But the only country to make it a public holiday is Luxembourg.

Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9 throughout the European Union. But the only country to have made it a public holiday is Luxembourg. This year, the European Commission will be holding its traditional “Europe Day” on Saturday, May 10, from 12 to 6 pm in Echternach. The 2025 edition will feature a European village with numerous stands, punctuated by a varied cultural program for young and old alike. There'll even be a chance to meet celebrities such as the Grand Duke.

What's more, the European Commission's free immersive visitor center at the European Parliament, the Europa Experience Luxembourg, will be celebrating its first birthday on Friday, May 9 from 10:00 to 18:00. A special day of quizzes, presentations, children's activities and food trucks awaits you.

Sunday May 11 marks the start of the Octave, the country's most important religious festival, whose tradition dates back to the 17th century. On the occasion of the pilgrimage in honor of Notre-Dame de Luxembourg, a traditional market, the “Mäertchen”, will be held on Place de la Constitution. Here you can have a drink, a bite to eat and entertain your children.

June 21, 22 and 23: Luxembourg National Day weekend

The long weekend of June will be a festive one in Luxembourg. Saturday June 21 marks the last day of the Fête de la Musique, while the following day, Sunday June 22, sees the start of festivities to celebrate Luxembourg's national holiday.

On the occasion of “Nationalfeierdag”, festivities will take place all over the country.

On Sunday June 22, starting at 4 p.m., the solemn changing of the guard will take place in front of the Grand Ducal Palace. In the evening, the capital will be illuminated by a torchlight procession, followed by a grand open-air party in the streets and squares. To round off the day in style, fireworks will be set off from the Pont Adolphe.

Over the weekend, in the Glacis parking lot, “City Sounds” will see a series of concerts to enthral the public.

On Monday June 23, starting at 10 a.m., the official ceremony begins with a ceremonial firing of cannons, followed at 12 p.m. by a military parade down the Avenue de la Liberté. In the afternoon, you can attend the Te Deum in Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Families with children can enjoy workshops and games led by artists and theater groups in Kinnekswiss Park. The atmosphere is guaranteed!

August 15, 16 and 17: Assumption weekend

August 15, which falls on a Friday this year, will give us an extra long weekend to enjoy the summer period.

Harvest festival in Greiveldange

Luxembourg is a land of traditions. In the village of Greiveldange, August 15 is Léiffrawëschdag, in other words, the harvest festival!  This ancient festival takes place at the time of full bloom and harvest.

The idea is to compose a bouquet, the “Wësch”, with herbs, cereals and vegetables. Religious tradition dictates that these bucolic bouquets are then blessed. This is followed by a procession in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Every year, thousands of visitors come to the Léiffrawëschdag, an excellent opportunity to sample typical Luxembourg dishes and enjoy the music, with a glass of crémant in hand!

Bacchus Festival in Remich

If you feel like it, you can also go to Remich, to take part in another great festival, which takes place on August 15: the Bacchus Festival! As the name suggests, you'll be able to taste Luxembourg wines and crémants, as well as grab a bite to eat. On this festive day, the town also organizes a large flea market. In short, it's a great day out!
